Conservation Projects
Client: Tesmar Group P/L & (Minchinbury Developments P/L)
Architects: JS Architects P/L & (Turner Hughes Architects P/L)
Completion: 2009 – present
Overview

Best known for its production of Penfold’s wines, this former vineyard has a long important history of making wines, including the production of Minchinbury Champagne in 1904 – the first sparkling wine produced produced for the Australian table. Penfold’s second Australian vineyard was established here between 1913 and 1978.

Development

The site has been vacant and derelict since the 1970’s and included a complex of purpose built 19th and 20th century corrugated iron and concrete structures within an important historical landscape. This multi-faceted project resulted in Development Consent for our clients as well as laying the foundation for a well-integrated adaptive re-use which is anticipated to be met with much success. The new residential & commercial complex will be conserved & detailed to a high specification with both fabric & interpretation telling its important story.

When completed the site will be accessible to the public through a heritage walk & café within the former still building.

Our Involvement

City Plan Heritage has been involved in the redevelopment of the former Minchinbury Winery, at Minchinbury in Sydney’s west since 2009.

City Plan Heritage was engaged to assess the site for its significance, archaeology & adaptive reuse potential, to update the 1985 Conservation Management Plan, identify necessary conversation works, outline a strategy for its heritage interpretation, & guide the future redevelopment with the client, Blacktown Council & the Heritage branch of the former NSW Department of Planning. A challenge has been the pending listing of the site at a State level in 2006. In 2010 we were pleased to see the proposal through to Development Consent stage, which included adaptive re-use of the surviving winery building, & new buildings of the site.
