City Plan was responsible for the preparation of a Development Application (DA) for a mixed-use development in Newcastle’s West End, the emerging future CBD of Newcastle.
The proposed development involves the construction of a 20-storey building comprising 74 apartments, five of which are ‘dual key’ design. The building’s three-storey podium supports two retail tenancies, bicycle storage and vehicular parking, and a number of apartments. Above the podium is a 17-storey residential tower. Communal open space and extensive plantings are provided on the podium’s rooftop. The building features a highly articulated facade and roofline which responds to the site’s location at the gateway to the Newcastle CBD. The material palette reflects the early industrial heritage of the surrounding area.
City Plan was engaged to prepare a Statement of Environmental Effects and Clause 4.6 Variation Request (Building Height) for the proposed development, engage with sub-consultants and provide strategic planning advice throughout the planning process. City Plan also engaged with the Government Architect NSW and Newcastle City Council’s Urban Design Consultative Group to determine the preferred design for the site and ensure the proposed scheme retains design excellence through to completion of construction. The development was supported by councillors for approval.
