Changes to the EP&A Regulations Now in Effect

The early months of 2022 have seen many changes to the Environmental Planning & Assessment (EP&A) Regulations which affect all classes of building works for both building approvals (Construction Certificates and Complying Development Certificates) and Occupation Certificates. The changes include the introduction of a new regulation for development certification and fire safety, changes in terminology, and updates to the EP&A Regulation to create a 2021 version.

As of 01 January 2022, any application for a Construction Certificate or Occupation Certificate will need to comply with the requirements of the new Environmental Planning & Assessment (Development Certification & Fire Safety) Regulation 2021. In addition, as of 01 March 2022, any application for a Complying Development Certificate will need to comply with the requirements of the new Environmental Planning & Assessment Regulation 2021.

With over 30 years experience within local government and private certification, Alison now holds unrestricted registration in both Queensland and New South Wales, and offers extensive expertise across a diverse range of building certification, fire safety and compliance matters across all classes of buildings.

Newcastle Architecture Award Winners for 2022 Announced

The winners of the Newcastle Architecture Awards for 2022 were announced this afternoon.

We are proud to be providing heritage and BCA advice, and certification services for the Newcastle East End development (stage 1) which received 2 category awards – for Urban Design; and Residential Architecture (Multiple Housing). The project was also named the winner of the prestigious Newcastle Architectural Medal for 2022.

Our Heritage Team Expands to Include Aboriginal and Historical Archaeological Services

We are excited to announce the appointment of Mitchell Cleghorn as Associate Director within our heritage team.

Mitchell is a heritage consultant, archaeologist and anthropologist with over nine years of project management and leadership experience on major infrastructure and specialist heritage projects across Australia. His experience includes coordination of complex projects including the ARTC National Heritage Asset Management Strategy, and provision of strategic advice on heritage management for major mining and resource sector clients, construction professionals and government bodies. He has a particular interest in early modern contributions of First Nations people to Australia’s rural landscape and how we recognise and protect those contributions.

Mitchell’s expertise allows City Plan to expand our heritage services to include the following Aboriginal and historical archaeological assessments and services:

  • Provision of research, field assessment, heritage management, planning and archaeological field services of Aboriginal and historic period sites.
  • Traditional Owner engagement and relationship management.

Alison Brown,                  Senior Building Regulations

Alison re-joins the City Plan team this week. With over 30 years experience within local government and private certification in both Queensland and New South Wales, and the United Kingdom, Alison offers extensive expertise across a diverse range of building certification, fire safety and compliance matters across all classes of buildings.

Aroha (AJ) Bates,            Senior Building Regulations

With over 15 years of building certification experience, Aroha is an accredited building surveyor with extensive experience in both commercial and residential certification. Aroha has a broad understanding of the associated building legislations in both Queensland and NSW, National Construction Codes and Australian Standards.

Rhiannon Morgan-Williams Senior Building Regulations 

With over 8 years of building certification experience, Rhiannon will provide technical support, details regarding QLD legislation and assist with the management of day-to-day activities of the project. Rhiannon takes a fresh and dynamic approach ensuring compliance is achieved and individual needs are met. This guarantees clear, honest and time responsive communication is delivered to clients and stakeholders. Rhiannon’s experience extends to both commercial and residential developments, including an understanding of numerous standards, disability and access and town planning.

Alison, Aroha and Rhiannon will join George and the Queensland team, providing certification services and building regulatory advice to south east Queensland and northern NSW.
